Folio. xxiii, 22, 212p, errata and directions to binders, lxxi, [213]-353p. Frontis portrait, 29 engraved plates (incl map of NZ as charted by Cook). 4466. Beddie 714. Sydney Parkinson, draughtsman to Joseph Banks on Cook's Endeavour voyage, died at Batavia on the return voyage. His work, an unauthorised publication ostensibly edited by his brother, infringed Hawkesworth's copyright regarding the official account of the voyage. On the book's appearance, an injunction by the High Court of Chancery prohibited further distribution until after the publication of Hawkesworth's narrative. In the preface the compilers made libellous and unfounded charges against Banks: 'When Dr Solander left the room, nevertheless, Joseph Banks snatched up the papers, and locked them up in his bureau; telling me to go and administer to my brother's will, and he would acquaint me when it would be convenient to him for me to wait on him to make an end of the affair.'
