1st ed. Stephen Swift & Co Ltd, London [1911]. 18.2cm. 252p. Handsomely rebound (without the final adverts) by the renowned Zaehnsdorf, London. Half green morocco. Raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Green cloth sides. TEG. Marbled EPs. Slight wear to extremities. Spine slightly faded. Very fresh internally, just a little age browning. Front hinge loosening somewhat. One of approximately 500 copies only of the first edition/first impression of Katherine Mansfield's first book, which disappeared so rapidly from the market that there was speculation that the majority of copies had gone down with the 'Titanic'. Kirkpatrick notes, however: 'The cause of the book's disappearance is more likely to have been Swift's personal difficulties. Stephen Swift was one of Charles Granville's aliases. In the first week of October 1912 he fled to Algiers after being recognised by a magistrate before whom he had appeared on a bigamy charge; Swift had been given bail and had absconded. The firm was put into the hands of liquidators and the stock was probably dispersed' (Kirkpatrick A1a).
