Tekoteko - Carved Ancestral Figure

Carved timber, fully detailed and finely depicted moko indicates high status of male subject. Strong chin and long head form suggests Ngapuhi (Northland) style. Tight kuru spiral on nose indicate subject was a significant orator. Hands rest on stomach, Piupiu hides removal of genitalia. Buttocks offer double raurau spirals in four waewae style. Gifted to Neva Clarke McKenna, a historian from Northland, this tekoteko remained in her family home for over fifty years. Overall patina reflects housed environment. Provenance: Collection of Neva Clarke McKenna. Private collection, Auckland.
