CONTEMPORARY ART 1960 - 2009

MON 14 SEP 2009 - 6:30PM

The results achieved in Webb’s sale of Contemporary Art, A Private Collection, held on Monday 14 September confirm that the market is alive and well when quality works are presented at realistic price points. The single vendor sale had all the makings of a successful event; excellent works by leading contemporary practitioners, a variety in media and value and most importantly, estimates set at slightly under current market expectation and conservative reserves. This dynamic drove interest from collectors and attracted a large audience of serious buyers. With a sale rate under the hammer of 85%, several new auction records set, a total of $700,000 and top estimates achieved for several key works, the sale was the strongest the market has seen for some time and indicates increased consumer confidence.

Highlights include $45,625.00 paid for the Peter Stichbury, Lily Donaldson an acrylic from 2007 (record price for the artist on the auction market), $86,687.50 for the Don Binney Kokako, Tiritiri Matangi, $63,875.00 for the Dick Frizzell Hut Interior. All the works by Shane Cotton in the sale sold under the hammer with the exception of the very early Gathering, Genesis $51,328.13, Blue/White $33,078.13, Island $33,078.13 and Trance at $33,078.13. Works priced in the under $20,000 category also sold very well including the Gregor Kregar, Coloured Gnome Trio $6,387.50, Max Gimblett, Comrade $14,257.8, Chris Charteris, Kouma Breastplate $5,703.13.
