The Important Works of Art auction was well attended with the community viewing Webb's mid-winter auction as a key indicator for the future. With over $1m in sales, the market is showing remarkable resilience and has remained stable compared with 2008. Mostly private buyers competed for key works resulting in several auction records being set. A bid of $251,000 for the Don Binney 'bird' painting exceeded Webb's previous record of $189,000 for the artist's work at auction. Webb's also re-affirmed its position as the leading auctioneer for the work of Colin McCahon with 5 of the 7 works by the artist generating competition and selling at or above estimate. The 'Small Landscape' achieved $57,000, 'Truth From the King Country' achieved $80,000, 'French Bay' $142,000, and the scroll painting $80,000. Strong demand was demonstrated for the work of C. F. Goldie with 'A Happy Thought' achieving $182,000. A record auction price was also achieved for the work of Peter Stichbury with 'Kirsten' selling for $27,000. The surprise of the night was a work by Alvin Pankhurst which achieved $31,000 against estimates of $8,000 - $12,000.
