The introduction of digital technology into the late twentieth century field of readily reproducible mediums signalled a significant paradigm shift within contemporary visual culture. In particular this shift radically altered the nature of the production, distribution, and exhibition of the moving image. The extraordinary breadth and depth of the collection represented in Move Me characterises the multiple ways in which these technologies have been absorbed into local contemporary art practices. The exhibition also highlights the significance of this shift in developing new art-making strategies on a global scale. From 16mm to interactive software, Move Me not onlyembraces diverse historical and contemporary approaches to the moving image but also examines the ways in which traditional and contemporary media continually overlap in mutually reinforcing ways. From Len Lye’s sophisticated and highly progressive commitment to introducing ‘motion’ to the language of art to the more recent ruminations of emerging artists on new media mediated conceptions of representation and culture, contemporary New Zealand artists have continued to challenge as well as bridge traditional aesthetic categories in their engagement with the nuances and challenges of the moving image.

With signature works by both leading and emerging artists the works represented in Move Me exemplify distinctly individual approaches to the use of new media technology. The selection of works included in this collection represent the pioneering ways in which established and emerging artists within New Zealand have absorbed and transformed the diverse histories of the moving image whilst engineering new developments within their practice. This highly covetable collection focuses on artists whose work employs a variety of new media, with particular emphasis on those works that have expanded upon the conceptual and aesthetic parameters of the moving image as well as the ways in which we see and represent ourselves.
