Project 04

27 MAY - 8 JUN 2004

Contemporary Sculpture

For Peter Webb, sculpture takes him to his roots as a gallerist. Of the Webb's Project 04 exhibition, he commented: “Webb’s is one of the few spaces which can accommodate an exhibition of this scale, the size of our gallery allows sculptors to work on a more ambitious scale than is normal. Past experience has shown that the art buying public respond very strongly to sculpture as they so rarely see interesting new work in any concentration." Thus this goal to allow sculptors to explore space in a greater capacity became a significant contributor to the basis for the show.

The exciting showcase featured new work by thirteen of New Zealand's most important Contemporary sculptors including Mary-Louise Brown, Neil Dawson, Andrew Drummond, Brett Graham, Robert Jahnke, Dennis O'Connor, Anton Parson, Peter Roche, Graham Snowden, Richard Thompson, Paratene Matchitt and Leon van den Eijkel.Over thirty works were selected in collaboration with sculpture consultant Jane Sutherland which made for a dynamic show with an extraordinary range of practice, materials and scale. From glass & stone to primary colored and highly polished stainless steel, this compelling exhibition provided an intriguing journey into the realm of a redefined space.
