The market for Māori and Oceanic arts and early colonial furniture has blossomed since the early 1990s alongside a rise in awareness of New Zealand and Pacific cultures and histories. Burgeoning interest from private collectors, dealers, museums and institutions has seen prices steadily rise for rare, early and well-documented pieces.

Of special interest to collectors are Maori figurative carvings, architectural fragments and weapons. A merging of the Māori and Pākehā cultures is reflected in pieces from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Early New Zealand furniture by master craftsmen such as Anton Seuffert and his sons William, Albert and Carl have found favour with the same collecting audience. Awareness of the importance and potential investment value of these marquetry and specimen timber pieces has increased with the publication of key texts on early New Zealand furniture and the work of Anton Seuffert.
