The collection of Dr Neville Hogg remains the most significant private collection of historical New Zealand works of art to have been offered on the auction market.

Dr Hogg was fascinated with New Zealand history and his collection, comprising nearly 400 works, included literally hundreds of works holding considerable historic importance including the likes of Gustavus Von Thempsky’s Encampment of the Forest Rangers, a painting recognised as being a key early document. more ...

Whilst represented in the collection were works by  artists with reputations such as Charles Goldie, John Gully and Nicholas Chevalier, Dr Hogg’s fascination with early documentary images, many by unrecorded colonial artists, showing the land and its people as they saw it, is where the wealth of the collection lay in historical terms.
