The Prospect Collection

The Prospect Collection was New Zealand’s first formal buying collective. The group purchased for 10 years and then sold the collection in its entirety through Webb’s in 1987.

It was initiated by Peter Webb and Grahame Reeves and brought to fruition through the efforts of Warwick Brown in 1978. Twenty-two members paid an initial $500 and agreed to contribute $250 annually. Under the guidance of Webb and Brown, the collection acquired superb works by Colin McCahon, Tony Fomison, Gordon Walters, Milan Mrkusich, Pat Hanly and Phillip Clairmont among others. more ...

The growth of the art market can be benchmarked against the rise in value seen for most works in this first, significant buying collection. By today’s standards, the prices achieved in ’87 were extremely modest but serve to demonstrate the growth the market has enjoyed over the intervening years.
