The first Bethunes@Webb’s Sunday Sale was a big success, with record attendance at the viewings and excellent results on auction day. 93.5% of the lots offered were sold and estimates were exceeded by an average of 10%.
The centrepiece of the auction, John Middleton Murry’s working copy of The Letters of Katherine Mansfield, realised $12,000 (estimate $10,000+); Malcolm Ross’s Ranfurly medal reached an impressive $5,900 (estimate $1,000+); Hawkesworth’s Cook’s First Voyage sold for $3,750 (estimate $3,500); Enderby’s Auckland Islands was hotly contested, achieving $1,500 (estimate $600); ‘A Los Toros’ mit Picasso, featuring original lithographs by the master, realised $2,000 (estimate $1,800); Malcolm Ross’s The First Traverse of Mount Cook fetched $850 (estimate $300+); and The Kia Tupato, the Official Organ of the Nineteenth Reinforcement, sold for $460 (estimate $300).
Entries are now invited for our second Sunday Sale, to be held in early September.
