A copy of the first issue of 'Action Comics' (1938) - the first comic to feature Superman - sold on the internet this month for $1 million. This is more than three times the previous record ($317,000) for sale of the issue, which originally retailed for just US 10 cents. Around 100 copies only of the issue are known to exist, and few are in the 'very fine' condition of the copy sold recently. Stephen Fishler, co-owner of ComicConnect, has referred to the issue as 'the Holy Grail of comic books'.
Webb's is holding a sale of comics and related materials in 2010. The auction will centre on the Tom Mackie Collection of Australasian and international comics, including scarce issues of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
