Webb’s Fine Art Specialist and Rare McCahons in Christchurch, Wellington & Auckland

The private sale of two Colin McCahon works, a painting accompanied by its working drawing which is a rare pairing. Landscape with Three Trees and Macrocarpa Trees, Ross Creek Reservoir, Dunedin. The painting, dated 1940, is one of the earliest works exhibited by McCahon after he finished art school in 1939. The work was purchased directly from the artist by the renowned Austrian-New Zealand modernist architect Ernst Plischke. A letter from McCahon to Plischke regarding the sale of this work has miraculously survived. In this letter, McCahon states that the painting “is one of the very few I myself have been able to go on liking for more than a few months after they were painted.” As such an important figure in New Zealand art history, this painting represents the beginning of a significant artistic journey that would influence generations of New Zealand artists.
