“To seek beauty is a more worthy aim than to display luxury” – René Lalique

à la poursuite de la beauté

The Jack Richards Collection of Lalique Glass | Live Auction

Live Auction | Sunday 31 July, 6pm
Wellington Preview Evening | Wednesday 13 July, 6pm – 8pm
Auckland Preview Evening | Tuesday 26 July, 6pm – 8pm

As the title suggests, French artist René Lalique (1860-1945) was relentless in the pursuit of beauty and form in his chosen medium of glass. Female figures, flora and fauna were Lalique’s major sources of inspiration. He held the female form in the highest esteem, and wildlife and plant foliage had left an indelible mark on his creative imagination from the time spent with his maternal grandparents in the Champagne countryside. His passing in 1945 saw his legacy as one of the greatest glass artists of the modern era cemented, and his work remains at the pinnacle of the 20th–century glass art.

Dr. Jack Richards has assembled one of the finest privately owned collections of Lalique in the world. Richards has used his highly discerning eye to bring together an internationally significant collection spanning the artist’s entire career. Academics such as Damien Skinner have proven interest in Richard’s collection, with Skinner’s book Lalique Vases, receiving critical acclaim. Webb’s is honoured to work with Jack in presenting this unparalleled selection to the market. As the vast majority of these works have never seen the secondary collector, this represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors to acquire Lalique of exceptional quality and provenance.
