Webb’s to auction BNZ Art Collection

By April 26, 2022Uncategorized

Webb’s is proud to announce that we will be partnering with BNZ to tour selected works from the renowned BNZ Art Collection nationally before selling the collection at auction later this year.

BNZ has announced proceeds from the sale will be used to fund a philanthropic foundation. The foundation is being designed to help accelerate the work organisations across New Zealand are doing to create a better future for our communities.

The BNZ Art Collection has a long history as one of New Zealand’s most significant corporate art collections. Established in 1982, it was developed under the advice and stewardship of legendary art dealer, Peter McLeavey. It contains works by many of the nation’s most revered artists including Colin McCahon, Rita Angus, Gordon Walters, and Robin White. Works from the collection will tour nationally, showing in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland during August and September. The scale of the collection is such that two separate auctions will take place after the touring programme is complete. Dates for the auctions are Tuesday 13 September and Tuesday 27 September.

This is one of the most important collaborative ventures in our company history, and it will be a watershed moment for the New Zealand art market.

The shared aims of the two businesses make for a natural partnership. Serving New Zealanders for 160 years, BNZ is one of New Zealand’s most iconic institutions and its most enduring bank; Webb’s is New Zealand’s largest auction house, and it has been operating since 1976. It is an enterprise with a remarkable track record of representing key New Zealand artworks at auction, and of supporting philanthropic endeavours.

As well as focussing its extensive expertise and experience in auctioning fine art through the sale process, Webb’s is also excited to be contributing to BNZ’s foundation through a significant donation.

It will be our pleasure to bring this incredible cultural treasure trove to galleries, screens, and mailboxes throughout the country over the coming months.
