On Tuesday 30 September 2025, Webb’s Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia specialist Chris Wiseman will take the rostrum at the Remuera Club in Auckland to auction a vehicle that represents a convergence of heritage, education, and community impact.
The 1961 MGA Mark I—a rare British classic originally CKD (Completely Knocked Down) assembled in Australia, is a true, two-seater sports classic with a long bonnet, short rear deck, and streamlined fenders.
This particular MGA has undergone a meticulous mechanical restoration by students from Tikipunga High School’s Automotive Trades Academy in Whangārei. Over the course of three years and under the guidance of tutor Clint McEwen, the students disassembled and rebuilt the car from the ground up.
The project encompassed welding, bodywork, and engine mechanics—skills that not only restored a vehicle but also laid the foundation for future careers in the trades.

According to the organisers, “For many students… the project offered more than technical skills; it offered direction, pride, and a pathway into the trades.” The initiative was made possible through the I Have a Dream Charitable Trust, a long-term educational support programme operating in Northland.
The MGA was donated by Dave Cotty, a long-time volunteer, mentor, and MG enthusiast, whose vision extended beyond the car itself. Cotty saw the MGA as a tool for transformation—a means to equip young people with practical skills and a sense of purpose.
The vehicle, now fully warranted and registered, has been assessed by MG restorer Rob Sorenson, who noted its mechanical soundness and potential. “It’s a very straight car… a solid runner with all factory matching numbers. It could be driven as-is or serve as a base for a full concours restoration.”

The auction proceeds will be divided equally between the I Have a Dream and Tikipunga High School, directly supporting educational programmes and trades training for youth in Whangārei.
