Hendry’s career is marked by ambitious large-scale installations that captivate global audiences. Notable projects include her Rorschach series, featuring an entire mirrored maze filled with oversized inkblot sculptures, and Epilogue, where she transformed a chapel into a sea of thousands of hand-painted rose petals.
The Flower Market exhibition was originally displayed in an industrial greenhouse tent filled with boxes of plush fabric flowers, guests were invited to meander through this immersive sea of textile blooms. The overwhelming turnout famously led to the exhibition being shut down by police, before reopening in a larger industrial warehouse. This mix of humour, public reaction, craftsmanship, and large-scale experience is signature for Hendry.
It is rare to see a CJ Hendry work in the New Zealand market, making Flower Market one of the standout highlights in this auction catalogue. Other highlights include playful and unique works by celebrated artists such as Rita Angus, Len Castle, Martin Creed, Dick Frizzell, Bill Hammond, John Pule, Terry Stringer, Damian Hirst, and many more.
