Upcoming | Victories—Yuki Kihara

22.09.26—24.10.26

Webb’s Wellington Gallery is honoured to present Victories, Yuki Kihara’s first Wellington solo exhibition of new work since representing Aotearoa New Zealand at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022 with Paradise Camp. The exhibition comprises fifteen works that transform the Tiki shirt from a symbol of commercialised Pacific fantasy into a critical space for examining colonial history.

Across the series, Kihara adorns each shirt with early lithographs depicting Indigenous victories over colonial expeditions. Presented flat on custom-made hangers, the works ask viewers to reconsider how Pasifika cultures have been represented, consumed and reimagined, while reflecting on the broader legacies of colonialism in the Pacific.

The Victories exhibition is exclusive to Webb’s Wellington.

The exhibition will also include a selection from Kihara’s stunning Aotea‘ula series, courtesy of Milford Galleries.

Webb's Wellington Gallery offers an exciting calendar of selling exhibitions, complementary to the touring auction previews. These exhibitions allow collectors to purchase the works on display immediately, making them a perfect opportunity for art enthusiasts to invest in unique pieces created by established and emerging artists.
